Thank you thank you thank you to Amy for sending me Jackson Browne's new CD! Although I have to say that I was somewhat disturbed by this photo. I truly thought he was featuring some South American political dissident on his cover. This is NOT the singer songwriter I mooned over as a 15 year old poet! However, I was relieved when I saw him perform Going Down to Cuba on the Colbert Report a few weeks ago, that he had lost the griseous beard.
But most importantly, THE MUSIC IS GOOD! Sometimes, when JB releases new music, I'd rather he stick to the love and the meaning of life subject matter, and do less of the political stuff. But he does a nice job with this one, so that the social message isn't so intense, and the melodies flow beautifully.
I think my favorite track is Going Down to Cuba. It has such a relaxing feeling to it, I can picture myself sitting on the beach with a mojito, watching the Caribbean waves roll in as I listen.
I'm going to down to Cuba someday soonWhile I'm on the subject of music, I finally uploaded my track picks from Paste 47.
Following that Caribbean moon
It's been too long since I've been there
I'm going down to Cuba with my friends
Down where the rhythm never ends
Where women wear gardenias in their hair
2. Michael Franti & Spearhead - Say Hey (I Love You)Looking forward to Ashley, Carolyn and Jo weighing in on this one. Oh, and I'm going to go back and put the tango track from the global CD on my ipod, based on your recommendations. It will be fun to listen to that when I'm in Uruguay!
3. Dar Williams - It's Alright
6. Josh Rouse - Sad Eyes
9. Xavier Rudd - This World As We Know It
10. SMV - Grits
13. Damien Jurado - Gillian Was a Horse
17. Marc Broussard - Keep Coming Back
19. Randall Brambett - Blue Road
Last week was another marathon day at the Hair Cuttery as Grace decided blonde was not for her after all. Both girls felt that a little purple was in order, though. Results below.

Quote: "Time to decide what kind of world I believe in
The world open wide, Or the world about to stop breathing
In my world I'm standing just inside the door
In my world I'm speaking into the ocean's roar
And every thought of you casts its own little shadow
And everything I wanted, subject to review
Time may heal all wounds
But time will steal you blind" ~Jackson Browne - Time the Conqueror

Yay!!!!! a new blog post this morning!
I'll try and get my Paste 47 loaded up but i have to say i'm already upset to find that I bought the Michael Franti song already (and i think i bought it AFTER i received the Paste cd. )
I actually bought quite a bit of Franti's cd. And i bought some of Dar Williams recent one too and just now looked, and YEP, just as i thought: I also bought "It's Alright". so i keep wasting my 99 cents on stuff i already have!
i too saw the cover of Jackson Browne's new cd and thought it was VERY disturbing and wondered why he would choose such a cover. (The only guy i like in a gray beard is Kris Kristofferson.)
I have some leftover iTunes money and since you like the Jackson Browne cd, i'm gonna go buy it right after i finish posting. I have a bunch of running around to do and love when i have a new cd to listen to.
Speaking of the iTunes. I no longer have the section on their Music Store where it says JUST FOR YOU. Do you still have it on yours? I recently upgraded to the 8.0 also thinking it would get it back on there, but it doesn't.
Your girls are spending their college fund on their hair as much as they change it up! LOLOL... It really does crack me up.
Saw Jackson Brown on Leno last night and was surprised at how great he looked until the camera zoomed in for a close up and it actually looked like he'd had a little work done...or a bit too much botox for the occasion. I think I prefer beard to botox. But that is one scary picture.
However - the sound and soul are still 100% there!
I'm still listening to Paste 47 in the car, and haven't even loaded 46 yet. Nothing I'm really revved about that much.
My kneejerk reaction from a first listen on Paste 47. (Another horse song for YOU eque!)
Not my favorite stuff i have to say.
Obviously i love the Franti and Dar Williams cuts since i bought them already.
I like Xavier Rudd so maybe this one will grow on me, but it's not my favorite.
I also like Andrew Bird, but that one is just weird.
I do like the Randall Bramlett one too.
i like SMV too(what does that stand for i wonder?)
Probably though my favorite tracks are ones you don't mention: The Gabe Dixon Band and I also like Backyard Tire Fire. (Like the name of their band too.) They've been a Paste select in the past.
This one was a bit disappointing. Not one stand out for me, really other than Franti and Williams.
I burned the whole cd and then already took off some of the tracks.
I noticed that "just for you" feature was gone, too. I thought maybe it was because I hadn't bought anything in a while.
Kris Kristofferson, mmmmm....
pearl, i cannot allow myself to believe that JB would have work done. that would just be too sad.
Sorry those links weren't working. They're fixed now.
I LOVE GOOGLE. I didn't really think it would work but i plugged in "iTunes"+"what happened to Just for You" and actually got an answer!
Lost of stuff popped up and i checked this message board and copied and pasted the information from it. (see below).
this is why i HATE HATE HATE upgrades. Not once in my life has an upgrade made my life better. (my 3rd husband is the ONLY exception.)
I just knew when i was downloading version 8.0 that "Genius" was not going to be my friend. Oh well, i was such a sucker for that that link that i will now save money and iTunes will lose out.
Below is a cut and paste from a message board from

I was wondering the same question myself... so I decided to e-mail Apple and ask why I couldn't find it. Here was the reply:
"The "Just for You" feature is no longer available in the iTunes Store, but now has the feature "Genius" that replaces it. Genius can make playlists of songs in your iTunes library that go great together. Genius sidebar recommends music from the iTunes Store that you don't already have."
So yes, unfortunately 'Just For You' has disappeared and been 'replaced' with 'Genius' which does not even perform the same function as what 'Just For You'did.
P.S. I did buy the entire Jackson Browne album and some of the new Mellencamp album and made one cd out of them. I love them both. I especially like the Cuba song as you do on Browne's album and i also love both tracks directly after the Cuba song.
The Mellencamp release is reminiscent of his older work and i really liked it alot. I wish i hadn't run out of iTunes money or i would have bought the whole thing today too.
That's funny. I'm still on itunes 7.7. Last night I was on the paste website looking for more info on SMV (which I couldn't find), and saw that it is Todd Snider's birthday and he is giving away a free download of his new ep on toddsnider.com. So I was all over that.
I go through the whole "purchase" process and go to download and it tells me I have to upgrade quicktime. So ok this is 8 free songs, I'll do the upgrade. Lo and behold I find that I'm also upgrading itunes. Then Melanie comes home and starts huffing and sighing behind me because her online friends await her audience.
So I stopped the upgrade and just wasted all that time with nothing to show for it.
I agree about upgrades (AND your Brian exception, lol!). I was using the free McAfee antivirus that comes with comcast and have already lost two features that I use with that to upgrades. The kicker is they don't tell you about what changed when you upgrade, it's just gone. And to get it back you have to "upgrade" to the non-free ($50) version.
So my techie friend at work told me about avast! which has a free home edition of antivirus and internet security software. I made the change on Friday night (again with Melanie huffing and sighing over my shoulder) and so far so good.
I am off this morning to my convention in Philadelphia. My friends Lois and Carol are rooming with me. It seems rather self indulgent to stay in a hotel when it is only a 30 minute train ride home at night. But we have evening receptions and early morning breakfast sessions, and are seeing Dana Carvey on Monday night (it was supposed to be Aretha, but she is ill), so it makes sense to stay down there, and we save money (and will have more fun!) by staying 3 to a room.
I get home Wednesday night, and Friday Mel and I are going to visit the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, so it will be a busy week. I probably won't post an update until the weekend, but will check emails when I have the chance.
Just checking in to say Hi and to comment that Jackson DOES look pretty scary in that picture. Wasn't he on The Daily Show recently? Or was it Colbert? I know that I've just seen him and I never watch Leno.
About heartthrob guys who look bad now: my vote hands down goes to Eddie van Halen . . .
Worst upgrade ever: Webroot SpySweeper 5.8. Screwed with my Trend AV and locked my whole computer down.
Checked MS Vista and MS 2007 for help -- no luck.
Called GeekSquad (who installed everything on my new computer) -- their base charge for a house call: $300.
So I went out to the Webroot site and voila, a subtle little "oops...if you have Trend AV and down load update 5.8...
Plus now that I've "upgraded" my iTunes to 8.0 ( and immediately disabled Genius ) my new nano won't eject.
I love iTunes
I HATE iTunes
I love iTunes.
pearl, i too have a love/hate relationship with iTunes. I sort of want to blame it on my PC, thinking maybe it would run better on a MAC???
Here's something else i noticed: When i buy a song from the iTunes store now it takes FOREVER to load up and complete the purchase. I'm serious when i say i think i could empty the dishwasher and put new sheets on the bed in the time it took to purchase the Jackson Browne cd. What are these upgrades all about except for making my life harder?
Lynnie, you're right, Eddie Van Halen (and Keith Richards) are the worst in aging rock stars.
As far as McAfee. I had it loaded on my laptop (but we use Norton AntiVirus for our desktop) and after i loaded McAfee my laptop immediately got so slow i couldn't stand it, so it took it off and it went back to being normal.
If anyone figures out the Genius, let me know. I'm afraid to try it.
equeyaya, i hope you don't mind if i do my own blogging on your blog but i wanted to point out a couple of things to look forward to:
1. Wally Lamb has a new book coming out on Nov. 11. It's about a teacher at Colombine during that tragedy, but this is fiction.
2. Ray LaMontagne's new release came out today. It sounds good. But i'm thinking i might buy the whole cd from Amazon and not on iTunes.
I find that when i take better care of cds i buy at the store and i can find them more quickly. I'm alittle less responsible with my cd mixes and iTunes cd purchases.
I am still afraid of Genius. Maybe if i was a genius i wouldn't be.
So y'all let me know. If you're Geniusing, i want to know how it goes.
HI!!!!!
I'm back from my conference in Philadelphia with a bunch of photos to plague you with soon!
I've been following your comments, but haven't been able to post because I forgot my password.
I had a great time and have lots to share, so I hope to have a chance to update tomorrow, or Saturday.
Barbara, you gotta change your blog soon, cause that Jackson Browne photo is totally creeping me out. Even if it IS Halloween season.
